It is no longer an astonishment to say that smartphones and technology have become one of the basic necessity of almost everyone’s everyday life. In such scenario, there is growing emphasis from the smart device’s developers to provide a hassle-free experience to its audience. Despite such emphasis and demand, there are certain features that might not go well with customers expectations. On of such a feature is “bloatware”. Bloatware basically refers to the inbuilt apps/ files/ software that an operating system provides on devices. Now all these apps might not be of use to the users hence, creating a trouble. If you are also one such user who wants to get rid of such unnecessary apps on your phone you have landed on the right site. In this article, we have tried to explain the process concerning the removal of bloatware.
Bloatware by a standard definition refers to any software or application that comes preinstalled on the device. These applications or software generally are of minimal or no importance to the end-user. It inevitable to find such bloatware (apps and software) irrespective of the manufacturer and developer. These applications are added on to the device by the manufacturer or by the carrier to serve the purpose of their own but such a purpose is often irrelevant from the users perspective.
Considering the most popular operating system- Android, the issue of bloating though is not an inherent attribute of the OS it is becoming persistent in the recent times. This increase in bloated apps have welcomed unsatisfied users. The reasons why bloatware is an issue of concern are many. To be specific there are three main sources that multiply the number and intensity of the bloatware on your device:
- Device Manufacturer (OEMs)
- Carriers
Android being backed up by the giant leading software organization like Google is bound to have dozens of bloat apps, which are popularly referred to as Google Apps. Almost any of the Android user would agree that one would not find all the Google Apps useful. Moreover, Android being an open software invites numerous OEMs that manufacture Android devices to introduce their apps and software. Hence though Android being an open software is a boosting factor for various manufacturers and developers it adds bloat apps that cause inconvenience to the users. Further, if one buys the device from a network provider one is expected to get even more bloatware.
Disadvantages of Bloat Apps:
- They use a lot of space on the device and makes it difficult for you to download the apps or files of your desire.
- They overcrowd your device’s app drawer and increase inconvenience.
- Many of the bloat apps keep running in the background, which devours RAM and battery. Resulting in the slow down of the device’s performance and efficiency.
- There is a possibility that such apps can telegraph information to the app developer or OEM.
- Bloat apps are generally of sticky nature and hence they cannot be uninstalled without having root access.
Now that you have become well aware of the issues bloatware cause or if you have already faced similar problems through bloatware already; you might have been well convinced to look for ways to get rid of bloatware. As it has been mentioned in the preceding lines that removing bloat apps requires rooting of the device.
Once you have rooted the device you shall need a root file explorer app, which is available for free. The root file explorer app enables you to browse through system directories and files so that you can delete them manually. Following mentioned are some of the apps serve the similar purpose and are available on Google Play Store for download:
- File Explorer Root Browser
- Root Explorer
Now, you also need to download the ‘BusyBox’ app which is available for free.
As the app is installed open it and install the Busybox script on your device. After which using any of the root file manager apps mentioned prior you can uninstall/ delete the bloat apps that are of no use, from your smartphone. To do so, open the root file manager app that you have installed and go to System/ app folder where all the apk files are visible. Now, just tap and hold the apk file you wish to remove and select Delete option.
Measures to follow:
In a hurry to remove the bloat apps users end up deleting certain apps that are of essential function or assist other important apps that help in the functioning of the device. It thereby advisable that, before you delete the apk file of your choice make sure that you copy each and every APK file to either external SD card or on to your computer before terminating it. So that in case of any issue with regard to the functioning of the device, you can simply restore the corresponding APK back to system/app directory.
Remark:
If you are using a Samsung Galaxy device, ensure that you also delete a file called PreloadInstaller.apk else most deleted apps will be automatically re-installed by your device on the next boot.
