Segway brought a new self-balancing vehicle, given the name as S-Pod, does not require you to stand up. The new S-Pod is an egg-shaped two-wheeler from Segway-Ninebot that is designed for the users to sit and roam around theme parks, campuses, airports, and maybe cities too.
The same gyroscopic self-balancing technology of the traditional Segway is the power source of this new S-Pod. But unlike the traditional Segway, that should be driven by leaning forward, backward, and to the sides, the new S-Pod can be controlled by a small joystick placed on the right-hand side of the seat. Segway says that the self-balancing technology of the S-Pod always keeps the vehicle at the level, and the two wheels will help to move and change the direction when needed(even when stopped). There are three more wheels below the S-Pod, which presumably are used when the motor is not ON.
It also says that they got the inspiration for S-Pod from the Gyrosphere shown in the Jurassic Park movie and says that the S-Pod can travel with a top speed of 24 miles per hour, which it says is even more dangerous than being chased by the dinosaurs.
The company plans to launch it in the third quarter of 2020 and would be available for sale after that, probably by 2021. There is no information regarding the price tag for the S-Pod now.
Segway is ready to unveil several electric vehicles at the CES 2020 in Las Vegas next week, of which the S-Pod is just one. In December last year, the company has announced a line-up of electric motor scooters and mopeds. This morning it teased two of its e-scooters, one which uses a type of kick-powered cruise control technology.
The S-Pod is quite different from the traditional stand-up Segway. It is like Segway-Ninebot is trying to make the travel choice easy for those who don’t want to stand up for long and strain themselves by transforming the traditional stand-up Segway to a fully automated S-Pod, which doesn’t need to be driven at all.
