Last year, Microsoft unveiled Windows 10X when it announced a dual-screen laptop called Surface Neo that was supposed to launch this fall. The company then clearly mentioned that the Windows 10X operating system would be explicitly for the dual-screen devices only.
The company, at that time, in a blog post, stated, “Windows 10X is designed especially for new dual-screen PCs, but not as an OS upgrade if you already own a PC. Windows 10X would enable a new class of PCs that will complement and co-exist with today’s Windows 10 PCs.” But now, it looks like the company has changed its decision.
On Monday, in a blog post, Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer for Windows and Devices, Microsoft, said, “The world is at a very different place than it was last October when we had shared our vision for a new category of dual-screen Windows devices. With Windows 10X, we designed for flexibility. That flexibility has enabled us to turn our focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices, which leverages the power of the cloud to help customers learn, work, and play in new ways.”
Hence the latest operating system would be first seen in the single screen devices, and the company continues to work with the OEM partners in bringing dual-screen laptops into the market. “We would continue to look for the right time, in conjunction with our OEM partners, to bring dual-screen devices to market,” Panay said.
As of now, there is no information on when this operating system would be seen on the devices, but we are expecting to get more information on it at the Build developer’s conference that would be held later this month.
