It is known that Google has captured a vast space on the planet for its Google Earth and Google Maps Street View projects. The tech giant has revealed that it has covered around 10 million miles of Street View images for Google Maps. Also, Google Earth covered 36 million miles of high-definition satellite images.
CNET stated that it is the first time that Google is revealing the figures on one of its popular products. The company has announced that it has covered 98% of the entire world’s population.
Google Maps has added another feature, which is very useful for electric vehicle users all around the world. The users of the Maps can now search for EV charging stations and can also filter them based on the plugin types.
The Senior Product Manager of Google Maps, Thomas Escobar, said: “These beautiful photos show us parts of the world that we may never get a chance to visit, they also help Google Maps exactly model a world that is changing each day.”
It has been more than 12 years since the idea of Street View started as a side project to map the entire world. Google collects the images of the streets through a fleet of Street View cars. Each will be equipped with nine cameras that capture high-definition images from every vantage point possible.
Escobar also added, “These streetcars are designed to handle extreme temperatures without shifting focus so that they can function in different environments.”
For the places where driving is not possible, the Street View Trekker, which consists of a backpack that collects images. Boats, camels, sheep carry the trekkers, and also scout troops are employed to gather high-quality photos from various angles, often in some of the hardest-to-map places around the world.
The EV charging plug filter feature in Google Maps enables the users to add the type of plug their electric car supports in the Electric vehicle settings of the app. Google will take into account the same plug type when you next search for an electric vehicle charging station near your location. Hence, avoiding situations showing a charging station that does not support your car. Android Police first noticed this feature.
