Earlier in January, when the threat of the novel COVID-19 started to rise in Wuhan, people did not assume that it will take the shape of a pandemic as we have facing now. Why? Well, it is because of “exponential growth.” We typically hear this term, but do not entirely understand its actual meaning. So, to help people understand the concept of exponential growth and how it triggered the Coronavirus to become a pandemic, a YouTube channel specialized in VFX has made an exciting video.
The VFX artists over a Corridor, make some of the best visual effects videos on YouTube. Now, they made a video to clarify why the COVID-19 took everyone by surprise using some creative visual examples.
In the below video, the creators gave two recent examples to clarify the concept of the phrase “exponential growth.” Speaking mathematically, exponents are superscripts of the numbers that specify how much power a particular amount/value must be raised.
Coming to the video, the first example that the creators used here involve sheets of paper increasing exponentially to manifold. They began with only two sheets of paper and then asked the viewers to answer how many sheets of paper they would have if they had 2 raised to the power 100 (i.e., 2^100) sheets of paper. The quantity 2^100 looks quite small on paper; however, you would literally be surprised to find the answer. Can you guess? Let me give you a hint. If you stack 2 raised to the power 30 (i.e., 2^30) sheets of paper, you will reach the Moon!
In one other example, they asked a question, “How long would it take for a water droplet of water that doubles every minute to fill up the Grand Canyon?.” Well, I would notice that if water droplet will fill up the entire area of Grand Canyon eventually. However, if you think that it will take years to achieve that feat, think again!
The use of these examples opened my mind for sure, and well, i’m a little bit shocked too. However, now I understand why the novel COVID-19 became a pandemic in virtually no time at all. The world governments had been too sluggish to behave on it and even perceive it earlier than it grew exponentially, took over the world, and turned it for the worse. I wish the governments had listened to Bill when he warned us about this five years earlier.
