A Typo Broke Google Photos Unlimited Original Quality Backup on Pixel’s

What is the best part of owning a Google Pixel?- It’s camera resolution and unlimited photos backup (in original resolution). Even today, Google pixel phones stand in the top 5 best camera phones. Unlimited Google drive storage was provided to Google pixel phone users ( that included Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL) but those who flashed their AOSP ROM to customize it, were in trouble.

A minor typo in the AOSP build broke the feature of unlimited original resolution backup in pixel phones.

It turns out that those who had flashed their Pixel devices with a customized AOSP ROM were seeing their original resolution photos account towards their Google Drive storage which shouldn’t have been so. The typo was that the flag “PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER” was set to “google” whereas it should have been set to “Google”. This typo broke the build script. It was discovered by an XDA forum member Razorloves and a fix was given earlier in July. It came into working on July 6th and the part has finally been fixed.

However, Google had mentioned on several occasions that the free original quality uploads backup will be available only till 2021, and after that, will start to count towards the allotted storage space.

Pixel 3 is slated to release later this year and speculations suggest that the resolution storage offer might extend even further.

Pixel phones by Google established a standard in the quality of camera phones and set a benchmark for the same. It will indeed be exciting to see the new features which pixel 3 would bring about.
