TWRP recovery is a custom version of stock recovery which is used to flash custom ROMs. It is highly popular and is one of the most preferred methods used while rooting or installing custom ROMs.

Pre-requisites

  1. This guide only for Moto G6.
  2. Unlock Bootloader of Moto G6

  3. Remember to take a backup of your files before beginning to install TWRP and root your device.
  4. Your device must have more than 60% battery to prevent the sudden shutdown.

Steps to Install TWRP Recovery and Root Moto G6

Install TWRP Recovery

  1. Download and Install ADB drivers.
  2. Now, download Moto G6 TWRP recovery .img.
  3. Move downloaded TWRP file to ADB folder (In C: Drive) and rename the file to “TWRP”.
  4. Enable the USB debugging on your device after enabling ‘Developer Options’ by going to ‘About phone’ and tapping build number 7 times.

  5. Go to the ADB folder (In C: Drive) and then press “Shift + Right mouse key” and tap on the “Open command window here.”

  6. Now connect your device to the PC using a USB data cable.
  7. Boot your device into “Fastboot” mode and give the following command reboot bootloader

    adb reboot bootloader

  8. Your device will start booting in fastboot mode. Now to flash recovery image on the device type the following command.

    fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img

  9. To Bypass device encryption you have to format user data.

    fastboot format userdata

That’s all! You have rooted your Moto G6 using TWRP recovery. It can be checked by long pressing “Volume down + Power” buttons until your device boots into recovery mode.

    I followed the steps in this article, downloading the latest version of TWERP.
    When I tried to run the fastboot command, I got the following errors:
    C:\>fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.5.1_9-0-ali.img
    (bootloader) is-logical:recovery: not found
    Sending ‘recovery’ (16196 KB) OKAY [ 1.501s]
    Writing ‘recovery’ (bootloader) Image recovery failed validation
    (bootloader) Preflash validation failed
    FAILED (remote: ”)
    fastboot: error: Command failed
